Description

Gilbert announced this unusual train set in 1959-60 with a big splash, and a departure from Gilbert’s usual protocol whereby sets tended to represent contemporary railroading. The Frontiersman set harkened to the era when the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. was completed on May 10, 1869. I (seller) was so impressed by this release that I wrote to Gilbert congratulating them on the new Frontiersman. They actually wrote back with a thank-you note.
This set is strictly the locomotives and rolling stock and does NOT include the original box nor track, etc. It’s the 4-4-0 “Franklin” steam locomotive and tender No. 88, Overland Express express car number 30, baggage/exrpress-coach combine Number 40, full coach Number 20, “Gold Belt Line” ventilated box/stock car Number 55, and flatcar Number 65. NOTE: The baggage-express combine is not shown in the main photo.
This is a very clean set. Locomotive (with smoke unit) runs but could use a little cleaning and oiling. Slight corrosion on wheel rims. Knuckle couplers are intact and working. Overland express car has a slight smudge of green paint on the roof while baggage express combine has a slight black smudge on one side. “The Gold Belt Line” decals on both sides of the ventilated stock car are intact. All in all, a B+ set. Purchase of this set does not include the water tower and buildings in the background.
